Milwaukee Bucks news: Throughout his two-and-a-half decades as an NBA head coach, Doc Rivers has had the privilege of working with a host of players — both past and present. He’s left a bigger impression on some more than others, which includes one-time NBA champion Matt Barnes.
In a recent podcast appearance, Barnes spilled on his experience with Rivers. In his statement, Barnes also opened up on a couple of things he believes are Coach Doc’s most considerable weaknesses.
Milwaukee Bucks News: Doc Rivers’ Issues as Coach, Per Matt Barnes

Barnes played under Rivers for two seasons when their careers crossed paths with the Los Angeles Clippers. During that time, the 6-foot-7 swingman learned a lot about Coach Doc.
Speaking on the Third and Long podcast, Barnes heaped praise on Rivers for being a great motivational coach. Barnes, however, also spilled on what he believes are Rivers’ shortcomings:
“I think Doc’s strength is he’s a good motivator,” Barnes said (h/t Dalton Sell of Behind the Bucks Pass). “He’s a good communicator to people, with people. He’ll have you ready. His weakness is just kind of keeping it real when real needs to be kept. And then also just kind of in-game strategies, adjustments. Again, I’m not talking bad about him. I’ve played for better coaches just like [he’s coached] better players…
“[Since winning in Boston] it’s been a lot of talented teams. Us, the 76ers and now the Bucks, but [there’s been a lot of] underachieving with that talent.”

While Barnes chose not to hold back on his Rivers take, you can’t really say that he’s wrong here, particularly with the underachieving bit. After all, Rivers has had nothing to show for since winning the lone championship of his coaching career back in 2008 with the Boston Celtics.
As Barnes pointed out, Rivers has sat at the helm of some very talented squads — including this current iteration of the Bucks. Milwaukee supporters are hoping that it’s here that Rivers finally breaks his curse.
