Just recently, the Milwaukee Bucks cleared most of the old coaching staff to give way to Doc Rivers’ preferences. Among the candidates being considered to join is no other current Boston Celtics assistant coach and former franchise star Sam Cassell.
The Bucks’ previous offseason saw one-time NBA champion Jrue Holiday traded to make room for Damian Lillard. Under former coach Adrian Griffin, the All-Star point guard was able to lift Milwaukee’s offense to second in the league as he and Giannis Antetokounmpo formed a potent duo.
But right before the All-Star Game, Griffin was let go and Rivers was hired as his replacement. From there, the Bucks never found their footing and lack their identity in how they performed on the court. That trend carried on until Milwaukee was ousted in the first round by Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers, ending their season in a disappointing manner.
With the season over for Milwaukee, the focus now is to contend as soon as possible. Among the many moves the front office is considering is to form a credible coaching staff for Rivers, along with utilizing the Bucks’ draft picks and optimizing the roster for next season.
Milwaukee Bucks Targeting Sam Cassell As Possible Addition To Doc Rivers’ Staff
Apart from clearing the old guard, the front office is targeting several individuals to join Rivers’ coaching staff. Among them is Cassell, as revealed in an article written by Marc Stein.
“League sources say Rivers plans to make an aggressive push to bring Cassell onto his staff in Milwaukee if the former three-time NBA ring-winner as a player does not get the Lakers’ job.
Cassell is a legitimate candidate to watch here, league sources say. He is not only represented by Klutch Sports — which is the same agency, of course, that represents Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis — but Cassell is known to have a particularly good knack in the locker room when it comes to connecting with star players”, Stein wrote.
Cassell spent 15 years in the NBA, with five of those playing for the Bucks. He has won three rings during his stint with the Houston Rockets and Boston Celtics before becoming an assistant coach for various teams, such as the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers.
It remains to be seen whether Cassell will join Rivers’ staff or go elsewhere in the league. For sure, any team that gets him will greatly benefit from his experience.
