Does Bobby Portis deserve to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award? For his Milwaukee Bucks teammate Damian Lillard, that’s a no-brainer.
Lillard doubled down on his belief that Portis should be the Sixth Man of the Year frontrunner in an Instagram Story highlighting the big man’s stats for the 2023-24 season.
Damian Lillard Supports Milwaukee Bucks Teammate Bobby Portis

On Monday, Portis took to social media to make his case for the Sixth Man of the Year. The Bucks big isn’t really the favorite, with betting odds favoring Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk instead.
However, in Portis’ belief, he has the numbers to make a stake for the award. On a “report card” graphic he shared, he noted how he has the most double-doubles off the bench this season with 16, as well as the most rebounds off the bench with 573.
Portis is also second in points off the bench with 1052 and in the Top 30 among players eligible for the award in terms of field goal percentage (50.8 percent) and 3-point field goal percentage (40.7 percent). Not to mention that he did so while playing in all 82 games in the 2023-24 season.
Portis is such a consistent force that deserves more credit than what he’s getting. It’s hard to imagine a player this consistent, in a Top 3 team no less, being not given that much considering for the Sixth Man honor. Portis isn’t even in the Top 3.
After Portis shared his numbers, Lillard made sure to support him and took to his Instagram Story to bring more attention to the Bucks veteran. Aside from sharing the graphic that Portis posted, Dame Time also captioned it, saying “6moty easy call.”

While the Bucks have struggled to play consistently as a team, there is no denying how much impact Portis has had on them. There had been a number of times when he simply stepped up when the team needed him the most. Who can forget his 28-point, 16-rebound outing against the Los Angeles Clippers when Giannis Antetokounmpo was absent early in March? Or his 31-point explosion against the Phoenix Suns?

Portis has been a crucial part in the Bucks finishing as a Top 3 team in the East, and sure enough, he should be acknowledged for it.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Also Backs Milwaukee Bucks’ Bobby Portis

It’s not only Damian Lillard who has campaigned for Bobby Portis to win Sixth Man of the Year. More recently, Giannis Antetokounmpo also showed his support for the reliable Milwaukee Bucks big and shared his belief that BP should have been a yearly candidate for the honor.
“We’ve played together four years now,” Antetokounmpo said. “I think every single year he’s been the Sixth Man of the Year, hands down.”
It might be hard for Portis to win the award considering how the narrative has favored the other contenders. It might be a little bit late to change voters’ minds now as well. Nonetheless, for Milwaukee fans, he’s definitely the best Sixth Man out there.
And for Milwaukee to return to the promised land, they will need Portis to stay as the great double-double force that he is come the playoffs.
