Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis firmly believes he deserves to win the Sixth Man of the Year award this 2023-24 season. And he has the numbers to back up that belief.
Portis isn’t being talked enough as a Sixth Man of the Year frontrunner, and he wants that to change by emphasizing the numbers that voters oh-so love.
Bobby Portis Drops Milwaukee Bucks Report Card
On Monday following their regular-season finale against the Orlando Magic, Portis shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) detailing his numbers from the season.
Portis finished the year with 13.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from deep. He played in all 82 games for the Bucks, providing a stabilizing force night in and night out.
BP started in just four games as well, making him more than eligible for the Sixth Man of the Year award. More than that, however, Portis accomplished a lot as the first guy off the bench for the Bucks to further strengthen his claim for the NBA honor.
As Portis posted on X, he is first in double-doubles off the bench with 16, as well as rebounds off the bench with 573. He is second in points off the bench with 1,052, and in the Top 30 among award-eligible players when it comes to field goal and 3-point field goal percentage.
Despite that, though, the recent odds for the award put him behind the likes of Malik Monk, Naz Reid, Bogdan Bogdanovic and even Norman Powell. While the Bucks’ struggles probably didn’t help his case, it should be noted that Milwaukee finished third in the East–better than Monk’s Sacramento Kings, Bogdanovic’s Atlanta Hawks and Powell’s Los Angeles Clippers and in the same spot as Reid’s Minnesota Timberwolves.
With that being said, there’s really an argument to be made that Portis isn’t being given the Sixth Man of the Year credit that he is due.
Milwaukee Bucks’ Bobby Portis Speaks on Sixth Man of the Year Race
For what it’s worth, prior to their final game of the season, Bobby Portis shared his shock why he isn’t mentioned enough in the Sixth Man of the Year race. Malik Monk has basically been crowned the winner by several fans and media members even before the season ended, while Naz Reid posed some threat to him with a late surge.
Meanwhile, Portis has been really consistent in his role but has rarely been given the love he deserves.
“How am I not Sixth Man (of the Year)?” Portis asked. “I’ve been averaging 18 (points) a game since the All-Star Break though. So, how am I not Sixth Man?”
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo showed his support for Portis, noting that his teammate has always been a great off-the-bench player.
“We’ve played together four years now,” Antetokounmpo said. “I think every single year he’s been the Sixth Man of the Year, hands down.”
It remains to be seen if Portis will be able to sway some votes in his favor for the Sixth Man of the Year. But the reality is, it might already be too late considering the narrative–which is certainly disappointing given how great Portis has been for Milwaukee.
