Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis still couldn’t believe the NBA trade deadline reports of him being linked to the Dallas Mavericks for a Grant Williams swap.
It’s simply absurd in the mind of the Bucks big man and Sixth Man of the Year candidate.
Bobby Portis-Grant Williams Swap Rumors
To recall, during the NBA Trade deadline buzz last February, Portis has been often mentioned as a trade piece for Milwaukee as they look to improve their defense. The Bucks had been really feeling the absence of Jrue Holiday at that point, with their perimeter defense falling significantly.
With that, many see Williams as a potential solution. Portis, on the other hand, was viewed as a great trade piece considering his production. So for Milwaukee to improve their other needs, there was a real possibility he could be moved.
Obviously, the Bucks chose to stand pat and kept Portis. Sure enough, it has paid off significantly, with the veteran big man giving them consistent production on all areas.
As for Williams, the Mavericks sent him to the Charlotte Hornets in a trade that landed them PJ Washington.
For what it’s worth, there were a lot of fans who were angry with the Portis-for-Williams swap proposition, and it would have sparked plenty of criticisms had a deal gone through.
Bobby Portis Opens Up About Milwaukee Bucks Trade Rumors
Speaking with Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium on Monday, Bobby Portis reflected on the trade rumors and admitted his shock that it was even considered.
Unfortunately for Williams, he got some stray bullets as well, with Portis emphasizing that the Milwaukee Bucks swapping him for the former Dallas Mavericks wing just doesn’t feel right.
“When I got hints of it, I’m like, ain’t no way I’m getting traded for…excuse my French, that’s my guy, I love competing against him…but I shouldn’t get traded for Grant Williams. That don’t even sound right,” Portis shared.
To be fair to Portis, he has every right to feel that way. He has been an impactful player for Milwaukee, and the fact of the matter is he was having a better season–way better–than Williams at the time of the trade rumors.
The fact that even Milwaukee fans are so mad about the trade idea also supports that notion. At the end of the day, though, it’s definitely great to see Portis stay in Cream City. Now, he and the Bucks can simply focus on the task at hand: the NBA Playoffs.
