The Milwaukee Bucks have two of the most lethal offensive forces in basketball with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard playing alongside each other. When the Bucks pulled off the trade that netted them Lillard, visions of an explosive offense with seemingly endless points of attack filled the minds of Milwaukee fans.
The Milwaukee Bucks Have Yet To Reach The Ceiling of Their Offense
True enough, the Bucks are currently the highest-scoring team in the league, as they are averaging 124.6 points per game. Not only that but they also own the third-best adjusted offensive rating, with 119.9 points per 100 possessions. Only the Boston Celtics and the Indiana Pacers have better ratings than the Bucks, who will always go as far as where their star tandem takes them. But can Doc Rivers make the Bucks’ offense even better?
Eric Nehm of The Athletic thinks Rivers can install a new system that will further capitalize on the pick-and-roll capabilities of the two superstars.
Rivers could decide to build a brand new offense centered on pick-and-rolls with Antetokounmpo and Lillard, but ironing out simple actions might be even more important. When Antetokounmpo draws a double in the post and Lillard is waiting for a pass in the high quadrant, that possession should end with a wide-open catch-and-shoot 3 for Lillard, just as it has for Middleton for the last decade. But those easy looks haven’t happened nearly often enough in Milwaukee.
For a clearer picture of the pick-and-roll landscape of the Bucks’ offense, Milwaukee is just 13th in the league in pick-and-roll (handler) frequency rate but is sixth overall with 20.0 points per game in that setup — again for the handler. It shows that there’s still room for improvement for the Bucks’ already productive PnR attack. It will now be up to Rivers to design ways to enhance it.
