As compared to other teams in the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks have been relatively quiet about the NBA trade deadline. But if certain rumors are to be believed, it seems that the team is going to get things done before the deadline passes.
This need comes after several events that have affected the Bucks throughout the season. For starters, the team’s defense isn’t the same after replacing Jrue Holiday with Damian Lillard. Adrian Griffin was also fired from his post, even after leading Milwaukee to a second seed in the East.
With Griffin gone, the franchise went ahead and hired Doc Rivers as his replacement. But so far, this decision has yielded a 1-3 result, which included losses to the Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Utah Jazz.
This string of losses is apparently causing the need to become better on the defensive end of the court for Milwaukee. And as the NBA trade deadline approaches, there will be hard decisions to be made for the Bucks in the coming days.
Milwaukee Bucks Projected To Be Aggressive Players Before NBA Trade Deadline Expires
Days before the deadline, almost every team in the NBA is likely doing its best to get the best possible deal, including the Milwaukee Bucks. According to Marc Stein’s newsletter on Substack:
“The Bucks’ problem? They have no tradeable first-round picks in the wake of the Damian Lillard blockbuster and only possess two second-round picks that can be dealt before this season’s trade deadline. Milwaukee owns Portland’s 2024 second-round pick, which does project to land high in the second round in June, as well as their own second-rounder in 2027,” Stein wrote.
“The only tradeable salary of significance at the Bucks’ disposal, furthermore, would appear to be the contracts possessed by Bobby Portis ($11.7 million this season with two seasons to go beyond it) and Pat Connaughton ($9.4 million this season in Year 1 of a three-year deal).
Complicating the idea of trading either, of course, is that Portis and Connaughton were both valued members of Milwaukee’s championship team in 2021. But, again, Milwaukee is not shying away from its desire to make a move. Not at all. Stay tuned,” Stein added.
Stein’s analysis of Milwaukee’s situation seems spot on. Despite the lack of trade assets, there’s still a way for the roster to improve right before the NBA trade deadline expires. Be on the lookout in the coming days to see what the front office will do.
