The Milwaukee Brewers traded away two starting pitchers this off-season. Corbin Burnes being dealt to the Baltimore Orioles stole the headlines but they also parted ways with Adrian Houser and reunited him with David Stearns in New York.
Entering 2024 their starting rotation is filled with uncertainty, but Freddy Peralta is their clear cut ace and Opening Day starter. That has not stopped him from being involved in trade rumors in which a few weeks ago a Yankees reporter proposed that Peralta could be a trade target.
Now a second trade proposal has involved Freddy Peralta, but this hypothetical scenario from Bleacher Report is absolutely preposterous.
Milwaukee Brewers-Arizona Diamondbacks trade proposal involving Freddy Peralta is completely preposterous.
Bleacher Report recently wrote a piece about hypothetical last second trades that could be made prior to Opening Day. For reasons that will be highlighted soon they proposed that Freddy Peralta should be traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for a prospect shortstop.
Arizona Diamondbacks Receive: RHP Freddy Peralta
Milwaukee Brewers Receive: SS Jordan Lawlar
What was the reasoning behind this Brewers and Diamondbacks trade?
Here are a few takeaways as to the reasoning behind why this trade was proposed.
(The Brewers) A 2023 postseason participant that’s unlikely to be a contender in 2024 trades away a nationally underrated starting pitcher with three years of team control remaining for a middle infielder who ranks among the best prospects in all of baseball.
Arizona is in a spot where both of its highest-rated prospects are middle infielders. Tommy Troy is further away from the majors than Lawlar is, as Troy just got drafted in the first round last year, while Lawlar had a cup of coffee in the majors last September and could be a legitimate contributor this season.
Lawlar is a long-term asset whom Arizona could afford to part with to improve the starting rotation, which Peralta would do for them.
For Milwaukee, pairing Lawlar with Jackson Chourio would pave the way for them to trade away Willy Adames before he becomes a free agent next year.
This trade proposal is not advantageous for the Milwaukee Brewers.
It would not be wise for the Brewers to trade Freddy Peralta. He is on a very team friendly contract through the 2026 season. Even if Milwaukee re-tools in 2024 by having several younger players gain MLB experience the services of Peralta could be well utilized for seasons afterwards.
Another counter argument to this trade proposal is that it relies heavily on Milwaukee wanting to get a shortstop of the future before Willy Adames becomes a free agent. However the Brewers may have already addressed this issue by acquiring Joey Ortiz this off-season. Not to mention they have sure handed defender Brice Turang who could takeover for Adames and Eric Brown Jr is showing promise in the minor leagues.
