The Milwaukee Brewers have waited all off-season for the right trade package for Corbin Burnes to arrive. It appears that Matt Arnold found a deal that he could not resist as he traded his former Cy Young award winner to the Baltimore Orioles for one left-handed pitcher, one infielder, and the 34th draft pick in the 2024 MLB draft. This deal was executed one day after Baltimore gained new ownership.
Corbin Burnes has been traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Baltimore Orioles.
According to multiple MLB Insiders they have indicated that the full trade between the Brewers and Orioles is Corbin Burnes heading to Baltimore and LHP D.L. Hall, INF Joey Oritz, and a 2024 Competitive Balance Round-A draft pick going to Milwaukee.
This trade came just one day after John Angelos agreed to sell the Orioles. The new ownership group in Baltimore includes billionares David Rubenstein and Michael Arougheti. Former player Cal Ripken Jr. is also apart of the new ownership group.
What should Brewers fans know about D.L. Hall and Joey Ortiz?
Both D.L. Hall and Joey Ortiz have made their MLB debuts and should impact to the Brewers big league club in 2024.
Hall is a former 21st overall draft pick who found success at the big league level in 2023. In a limited sample size of 19.1 innings he pitched to a 3.26 ERA and 28% strikeout rate. His fastball averages 96 MPH and he also compliments a slider, changeup, and occasionally a curveball into his arsenal.
Ortiz is currently MLB Pipelines 63rd overall prospect and he has the defensive skills to handle shortstop. Offensively he has good contact rate metrics and good power potential, but only time will tell how his bat plays at the big league level.
How long will the Brewers have D.L. Hall and Joey Ortiz under contract for?
Neither Hall or Oritz have a full season of service time at the MLB level and are pre-arbitration players. This will keep them both under team control until 2030. Hall is in a trickier spot because he only has one minor league option remaining whereas Ortiz has two option years left.
