The Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets have agreed to their first trade with one another in the era of which David Stearns is the president of the baseball operations era in the big apple. This deal reunites David Stearns with starting pitcher Adrian Houser and outfielder Tyrone Taylor. It also only cost the Mets one minor league player in return.
Coming to Milwaukee in the deal is right-handed pitcher Coleman Crow. He is a 22 year old prospect who after the trade slots in the Brewers farm system as their 25th ranked prospect. Unfortunately for him he underwent tommy john surgery in July and pitching in 2024 is not a guarantee.
Despite having undergone elbow surgery Brewers GM Matt Arnold indicated that they have had their eye on him for quite some time. Arnold says, “Crow has a “top-end” breaking ball. Also a bulldog mentality on the mound. Two qualities that give him the potential to eventually be a good MLB starter.
Evaluating the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets trade that sent Adrian Houser and Tyrone Taylor to the big apple in exchange for Coleman Crow.
A few noteworthy things regarding this trade is that it saves the Brewers an estimated $7.3 million. Adrian Houser was projected to earn $5.6 million in arbitration in 2024 and Tyrone Taylor $1.7 million. Additionally, Adrian Houser has surpassed five years of MLB Service time and can refuse a minor league assignment whereas Tyrone Taylor has no minor league options remaining.
Performance wise Adrian Houser has a career ERA of 4.00 across 539.1 innings. His sinker generates a lot of ground balls and tends to miss a lot of barrels. Tyrone Taylor has shown flashes of potential throughout his Brewers career but ultimately always falls back into the role of fourth outfielder. He has good power and plays solid defense.
As for Coleman Crow there is a lot of upside with him. It’s unfortunate that he may not pitch in 2024 and definitely won’t contribute at the big league level next year, but down the road this deal could pay dividends for the Brewers.
