The Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Pittsburgh Pirates all had unique off-seasons and made major moves at various points. For the Cardinals they came out guns blazing in free agency and signed three starting pitchers to contracts. The pitchers signed were Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn.
Sonny Gray was announced as the St. Louis Cardinals opening day starter.
Starting pitching was a weak spot for St. Louis in 2023. Concerns between new catcher Willson and the pitching staff were made public, but ultimately president of baseball operations John Mozeliak promised to bring in at least three new starters during the off-season. He held true to that promise by signing Gray, Gibson, and Lynn in which Gary was previously announced as his opening day starter for the 2024 season.
What kind of injury is Sonny Gray dealing with and what is the prognosis?
During a spring training game on Monday Gray was removed from his outing and was tugging at the back part of his right leg. A MRI later confirmed a hamstring strain that is currently being labeled as mild. Mozeliak did not want to put a timetable on the injury but stated that “this is something that is going to slow Gray down” and that it will be challenging for him to be ready by opening day. He does not expect this to linger long term.
Will Sonny Gray’s hamstring injury force him to miss any games against the Milwaukee Brewers?
An injured list stint is likely coming for Sonny Gray, but Cardinals reporter Katie Woo of The Athletic indicated that a better timeline estimate is expected to be available around three to five days after the injury date. The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals will meet for the first time in 2024 on April 19. Even if his hamstring is healed by then it’s possible that he may not be ready to return at that point because he may still be working on building up his arm and at that point.
