The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night by a score of seven to five. This victory ensured a season series win for the Brew Crew. In regards to playoff implications this means that the Brewers currently have the advantage in any tie-breaking scenarios.
If the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies end with the same regular season record the advantage would go towards the Brew Crew.
This is the second year in which expanded playoffs have impacted Major League Baseball. As of 2023 the top two division winners get a first round bye, the third division winner and sixth ranked Wild Card team meet in a best of three Wild Cards series, and the fourth and fifth ranked Wild Cards teams square off.
With the Brewers clinching the season series against the Phillies this means that they hold the tiebreaker in any playoff scenarios. For instance should the two teams meet Milwaukee would own home field advantage, or be the higher seed because the tie-breaking category is head-to-head record.
Seeding with this realistically would only come into play if the Brewers end up losing the division and falling to a fourth or fifth seed. If Philadelphia finishes with the same regular season record as Milwaukee then the Brewers would be the higher seed based on the tie breaker mentioned above.
Hopefully it does not come down to that and Milwaukee will clinch the third seed and the National League Central division crown.
