Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jackson Chourio officially has one month of big league baseball underneath him. The 20 year old signed a massive contract during the winter and has very high expectations. Ups and downs are expected in young players, but let’s take a look at how he did and compare it to other rookies in the league.
Jackson Chourio got off to a hot start to his rookie campaign, but fell off quickly.

To begin the year Chourio had a five game hitting streak that included two multi hit games. Extending beyond that he collected at least one base knock in 11 out of his first 13 games. During that time he had a .259 batting average and .305 on-base percentage. From game 14 through 27 those numbers dropped to a .140 batting average and .196 on-base percentage.
The Milwaukee Brewers are continuing to give Jackson Chourio at-bats.

Despite the offensive struggles the Brewers are continually putting Chourio in the lineup. Despite hitting near the bottom of the order against right-handed pitchers his 97 at-bats are tied for the fifth most on the team. Pat Murphy has been utilizing him in the leadoff spot against lefties but he has just a .188 batting average across 20 at-bats when facing southpaws.
Where does Jackson Chourio rank when compared to other rookies around the league?

Throughout the first month Jackson Chourio slashed .206/.257/.351. He had a 32% strikeout rate, 35% chase rate (28.4% is league average), 36% whiff rate on breaking balls, and he has been aggressive on the first pitch of at-bats (38% first pitch swing rate). Here is where he ranked when compared to other rookies around the league.
At-bats (97): seventh
Runs (12): 12th
Hits (20): tied for eleventh
Home Runs (4): fourth
RBI (13): fourth
Strikeouts (34): second
Stolen Bases (5): tied for second
Heading into month two it will be interesting to see how long the Brewers stick with Chourio while he is slumping. His rankings among rookies aren’t bad (outside of the strikeouts) but given the fact he has been a starter since Opening Day that isn’t all too surprising.
