The Milwaukee Brewers made some tough decisions over the final week of the regular season as they tried to align their pitching staff perfectly for the Wild Card Series that will be played against the Arizona Diamondbacks. One casualty was veteran starting pitcher Julio Teheran who was designated for assignment.
Criag Counsell described that roster transaction as “not something that we wanted to do, but we set a priority of making sure the pitchers we’re going to count on in the next round went into it in a good situation.” That statement sounded pretty assuring that Julio Teheran would not be back with the Brewers. Unfortunately things change quickly and Milwaukee has now learned that they will be without Brandon Woodruff for at minimum the Wild Card Series.
Could Julio Teheran return to the Milwaukee Brewers during the playoffs?
According to the transaction log at MLB.com Julio Teheran accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A. This keeps him in the Brewers organization until the completion of the season in which he then will become a free agent. Even though he is currently not on the 40-man roster because he was a part of Milwaukee’s organization prior to September 1 he is still post-season eligible. Had he been claimed by another team he would not be post-season eligible with them.
During the off-season Julio Teheran will certainly get interest from other teams given his strong performance in 2023 that consisted of 71.2 innings pitched and a 4.40 ERA. A few blow up outings inflated his ERA and he otherwise pitched very well for the Brewers. With Brandon Woodruff’s future this post season up in the air it’s possible at some point the Brewers make a roster move to bring him back.
Teams tend to carry less pitchers during the best of three games Wild Card Series, but the National League Division Series is best of five and the Championship Series is best of seven. It is possible that we see Julio Teheran later on in the post season should Milwaukee advance that far.
