The Milwaukee Brewers currently have a plethora of Major League outfield talent including Christian Yelich, Jesse Winker, Garrett Mitchell, Joey Wiemer, and Tyrone Taylor. They also have Sal Frelick, Jackson Chourio, and Blake Perkins in the Minor Leagues. Despite this, Jon Heyman of the NY Post subtly indicated in his latest column that the Brewers were the lone team to express interest in Avisail Garcia of the Miami Marlins this off-season.
Garcia, a one time All-star, signed a four year and $53 million contract with the Marlins in December of 2021. His base salary from 2023-2025 is $12 million and he has another $12 million club option for 2026. Despite this, the Marlins were open to trade talks during the off-season in which according to Jon Heyman the Brewers were the only team to inquire about him.
The Milwaukee Brewers reportedly inquired about outfielder Avisail Garcia last off-season.
Avisail Garcia was with the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He struggled during the 60 game shortened season, but then had a resurgence in 2021 that was fueled by getting more lean and cutting sugar out of his diet. With the Brew Crew in 2021 he hit 29 home runs, 86 RBI, and had a .820 OPS.
Since joining the Marlins, Garcia has struggled. In 2022 he appeared in just 98 games. His power disappeared and his OPS was just .582. To begin 2023, he is off to a slow start in which through nine games he is hitting .103 with nine strikeouts and 29 at-bats.
It’s unclear exactly when the Brewers reportedly inquired about Avisail Garcia’s availability, but it likely was them just doing their due diligence on a player who previously had success in their organization.
