Milwaukee Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio spoke to reporters on Saturday where he spoke about Craig Counsell‘s future with the club after this season.
Counsell is in the final year of a three-year contract he signed on January 8, 2020, with the Brewers in the middle of a playoff push there was hope Counsell’s contract would be extended but according to Attanasio, they have tabled those talks for now.
Milwaukee Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio gave a bleak outlook on Craig Counsell’s future with the club.
Milwaukee Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio on if Manager Craig Counsell will manage the club next season.
“It’s up to Craig. We’d love to have him here obviously.”
To be fair to Attanasio, this is as much of Counsell’s decision as it is the Brewers. Counsell has four kids including two who play baseball (Brady Counsell is entering his junior season at Minnesota), and Jack Counsell is entering his freshman season. Maybe Counsell decides to leave Milwaukee to spend more time with his family.
Counsell is the second-longest tenured manager in the MLB behind the Guardians Terry Francona. He has taken the Brewers to new heights by leading them to four straight playoff appearances from 2018-21 and passed Phil Garner for most wins as Brewers manager in 2022.
It’s smart for both sides to wait until after the season to see what they want to do. Counsell, if the team makes the postseason and doesn’t advance to the World Series, he could decide to leave because he’s taken the team as far as he could.
Milwaukee could risk losing two important people in the span of a year, with President of Baseball Operations David Stearns stepping down last October to take an advisory role with the team. There was a report from Bob Nightengale from USA Today that Stearns is expected to become the new President of Baseball Operations for the New York Mets. There could be a chance Counsell bolts Milwaukee for New York.
Maybe Counsell wants to manage a team willing to spend and work with owner Steve Cohen who will do anything to win at all costs. Well, scratch that win at all costs in 2025 and 2026. If Counsell wants to manage somewhere else, the New York Mets don’t seem to be the best fit
The Milwaukee Brewers and Craig Counsell have a massive decision to make in the offseason, and it’s troubling that the manager who’s helped change the landscape of baseball in Milwaukee could be out the door next season.
