Major Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets news was made public recently by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. His reporting indicated that at this year’s trade deadline the Brewers were in the center of trade discussions for star first baseman Pete Alonso.
Also included in Rosenthal’s report was which prospects were discussed as a center piece for a trade. He indicated that Brewers top prospect Jackson Chourio was not on the table, but the teams second through fifth ranked players in Sal Frelick, Jeferson Quero, Jacob Misiorowski and Tyler Black were.
If trade negotiations resume in the future the two teams will need to keep in mind that circumstances are slightly different. For instance now Pete Alonso has just one year of team control remaining instead of one and a half. Additionally Sal Frelick has made a big league impact since then and it is possible that Tyler Black does this season as well.
The ability to make trades will resume again once the season is complete. Let’s take a way too early look at what a trade package could look like.

Brewers receive: 1B Pete Alonso
Mets receive: 3B Brock Wilken and LHP Ethan Small
The Mets may have missed their window of opportunity to acquire a top five Brewers prospect, so this deal has them parting ways with Brock Wilken, their 2023 first round draft pick and eighth ranked prospect, as well as 30th ranked prospect Ethan Small.
Brock Wilken, a college bat selected out of Wake Forest, figures to progress through the minor leagues quickly. With the Mets in rebuild mode he could be MLB ready in a few years and be a big contributor for them. On the flip side Ethan Small, a former first round pick and Mississippi State star, has struggled each of the past two seasons both as a starter, reliever, and in limited big league time. A change of scenery could help get his career back on track.
This deal is a bit risky for New York in the fact that Brock Wilken just started his affiliated ball career and Ethan Small has not lived up to expectations. However Pete Alonso is a rental player and if Wilken lives up to his projections of a power hitting infielder then the Mets will have gained a controllable player for several years to come.
