It’s been a strange start to the Milwaukee Brewers 2023 season. They got off to a rip-roaring start in April but then managed just two series wins during the month of May. Despite this they currently find themselves on top of a weak National League Central division with a 29-27 record. This has them poised to be in contention for a play-off spot.
A season ago the Brewers made some controversial trades at the deadline that included parting ways with star closer Josh Hader. Milwaukee slumped following the trade, clubhouse chemistry and concerns arose, and the team ultimately missed making the post season by one game.
This year the MLB trade deadline is set for August 1, 2023. Multiple rumors have already been out surrounding a few Brewers players, but according to Jon Heyman the Brew Crew will not be sellers this year and one highly coveted trade candidate will be staying put.
Per Jon Heyman Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes will not be traded this year.
The Brewers will not sell this trading season, according to a well-placed source. Things can change, but the Brewers, who’ve managed to hold onto first place despite many key injuries, are determined not to repeat a situation like last year — when fans and clubhouse reacted with horror at the deadline trade of beloved lockdown closer Josh Hader. That deal triggered a slump, causing them to fall out of first and miss the playoffs by one game.
So that means coveted right-hander Corbin Burnes isn’t going anywhere.
What Jon Heyman is reporting makes sense. The Brewers are currently in play-off contention and last years trade deadline strategy backfired so going forward with a similar approach does not make much sense.
