The Milwaukee Brewers moved the needle a bit in MLB free agency on Monday when it was reported that they are adding right-handed pitcher Jakob Junis on a one-year, $7 million deal that will be official pending a physical.
Milwaukee Brewers’ Jakob Junis Move Met With Mostly Positive Reactions
Junis’ addition to the Milwaukee Brewers’ pitching staff has been getting good reactions from experts and fans since the report broke.
“My thought on Jakob Junis earlier this winter was ‘this guy has Rays written all over him.’ Signing someone like that is generally not a bad idea. Junis gives the Brewers important depth and an ability to mix and match with their arms a bit more freely,” posted Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“Junis will hardly replicate Corbin Burnes’ innings (who would?) but I thought he’d be a sneaky addition for teams this offseason. Across 198 IP as a swingman from 2022-23, Junis had a 97 ERA+ and 3.69 FIP. ”
“$7M!! Thought he was a cheaper Houser replacement, but ceiling must be higher for Junis than what the Crew saw in Houser. Excited to see how he can contribute!” stated X user @HireSveum.
From @McLovinOC8: “Such a high upside signing here. Slider is elite with a 129 stuff+. Have to imagine they have a plan for the FF/Sinker to get him to be a consistent 5 good innings type of guy”
Junis, who turned 31 last September, is coming off a two-year stint with the San Francisco Giants and in 2023, posted decent numbers of 3.87 ERA and 3.74 FIP along with a 3.3 percent home run rate and a 26.2 percent strikeout rate.
More reactions:
Junis felt like a good fit for the Brewers all offseason, but especially so after the Burnes trade. Really like this pickup. Hoping this makes Joe Ross a pen arm where I think his pitch mix would play much better. https://t.co/rx9GleeiLg

Ortiz, Hall, Junis…. Not so sure the Brewers are significantly worse post Burnes trade pic.twitter.com/BBXyjrTieK

Here’s that nasty slider that Junis throws a ton. Sweeping slider from right to left that nose dives late. Going to be fun to get him in the #Brewers pitching lab and see what else he can get on this pitch. pic.twitter.com/f9K5gpNkbh
