The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 12-5 to clinch their first series of the season against one of their fiercest division rivals. After falling behind 4-2 early, Milwaukee quickly jumped back in front following a two-run home run by Brice Turang and a solo shot by rookie phenom Jackson Chourio.
Chourio’s blast, which gave the Brewers a lead that they would not give back, was his fourth home run of the season. By the time the game ended, Chourio had gone 2-3 with his home run, two walks, three runs scored, and a stolen base.
While Chourio’s season has been streaky (he was in a 3-30 slump entering play on Saturday), there is no denying the flashes of potential brilliance that he has shown. At just 20 years old, the numbers that he has put up have already placed his name in rare territory in MLB history.
Milwaukee Brewers’ Rookie Jackson Chourio Is Just 4th Player Ever to Accomplish Home Run Feat
When Chourio hit his third home run of the season this past week against the San Diego Padres, he became the third youngest player in MLB history to record three home runs through his first 13 career games. His fourth blast of the season on Saturday once again put him in rare company.
According to MLB analyst Sarah Langs, Chourio (at 20 years, 40 days old) is just the fourth youngest player since 1900 to have four home runs in his first 17 career games. The only players younger than him to have accomplished this feat are:
- Tony Conigliaro (1964 Boston Red Sox)- 19 years, 120 days
- Andruw Jones (1996 Atlanta Braves)- 19 years, 138 days
- Lou Klimchock (1958-59 Kansas City Athletics)- 19 years, 345 days
Jackson Chourio Could End Up with a Better Rookie Season than Milwaukee Brewers Legend Robin Yount
With his two-hit performance on Saturday, Chourio is now hitting .235/.293/.426 with four home runs, 13 RBI, and four stolen bases. While those batting numbers may not jump off of the page, it is worth noting that the legendary Robin Yount was not an overnight sensation.
In 1974, his rookie season, Yount hit .250/.276/.346 with three home runs, 26 RBI, and seven stolen bases. He also committed 19 errors (and committed 44 in 1975 and 31 in 1976).
While it is still early, it is clear that Chourio is on pace to have a better year than Yount did as a rookie.
