During their first series after the all-star break, Milwaukee Brewers rookie right fielder Jackson Chourio looked like an absolute star in the Brewers two-game sweep over the Minnesota Twins. Last night, Milwaukee took part in their final series against division rival, the Chicago Cubs of the 2024 regular season. Before the game started, Cubs manager Craig Counsell was irate in a press conference surrounding third baseman Christopher Morel’s at-bats.
In this first game between the Brewers and the Cubs, Milwaukee’s offense looked weak, only recording five hits during a 3-1 loss. The Brewers are 57-43. They currently have a five-game lead in the NL Central division. Chicago is now 49-53. The Cubs are nine games back from the first-place Brewers within the division.
Milwaukee Brewers Offense Looks Weak in 3-1 Loss to the Cubs
Cubs starting pitcher Javier Assad escaped a huge jam in the top of the third inning when he got Brewers center fielder Sal Frelick out on a groundout. A half inning later, Cubs first baseman Michael Busch lifted an RBI single into center field to give Chicago the first run of this ball game. At the top of the fourth inning, Cubs relief pitcher Drew Smyly escaped a clutched bases-loaded situation, which shot down any chance of the Brewers making a serious run during this matchup. During the bottom of the fourth inning, Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong was up to bat and when Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers threw a wild pitch, Cubs designated hitter Mike Tauchman scored.
Both Teams Score A Run
A few innings later during the bottom of the sixth inning, Cubs left fielder Ian Happ crushed his 16th home run of the year to right field to give Chicago a 3-0 lead. Milwaukee finally scored their first run of the game in the top of the eighth. Brewers shortstop Willy Adames obliterated his 16th home run of the year to right-center field. Besides this one run being scored, the Brewers offense was silenced. They collected five hits in their 3-1 loss. Milwaukee must continue to gain confidence and will have to show out on the road during their next two games against Chicago.
Top Performers from the Brewers 3-1 Loss
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Javier Assad pitched three and one third innings allowing a hit and six walks while striking out batters. Michael Busch and Dansby Swanson were the only Cubs recording multiple hits. Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers pitched five and one-third innings. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six batters in the loss. Shortstop Willy Adames went one for two with two walks and an RBI.
