The Milwaukee Brewers’ decision to part ways with one of the best pitching weapons in baseball today might have come down to how much they feel they can keep Corbin Burnes beyond the 2024 MLB season.
Matt Arnold Reiterated Corbin Burnes Outlook for the Milwaukee Brewers
Burnes is set to play out the last year of his arbitration eligibility in the 2024 campaign and is expected to be a free agent in the next offseason, as reiterated by Milwaukee general manager Matt Arnold in the wake of the trade.
Via Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
And the reality of our situation is that we had one year left with Corbin. I think Corbin had been pretty public about how this was going to be his last year as a Brewer. And so we felt like the opportunity to help our team right now with players like DL Hall, who was outstanding in the playoffs last year for the Orioles, is very young and Major League ready, Joey Ortiz, who we liked a lot and a late first round pick is a very well-balanced and exciting deal for us. Again, it’s always tough – and I’ve had to do this a number of times throughout my career – to trade really good players. I understand that comes with some pain and this is not an easy decision for us. But I think the opportunity to help our major league team right now and also in the future is something that’s actually really exciting for us.
Burnes signed a $15.637 million contract with the Brewers back in January to avoid arbitration, but he will now be a feature weapon on the mound for the Orioles, who are looking to build on their successful 2023 campaign. Losing Burnes will be felt by the Brewers in 2024, but with their eyes on the future, they hope that the assets they got in return will eventually blossom in the big leagues.
In 167 total appearances for the Brewers, including 106 starts, Burnes went 45-27 with a 3.26 ERA and 3.11 FIP.
