The Milwaukee Brewers and the new ownership group of the Baltimore Orioles came to terms on a trade centering around ace Corbin Burnes. In order for the O’s to acquire him they had to part ways with LHP DL Hall, INF Joey Ortiz, and the 34th overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft (Competitive Balance Round-A Selection).
This transaction has created some mixed emotions towards the Brew Crews intentions in 2024. A few weeks ago they signed free agent Rhys Hoskins and appeared to be pushing more chips into being a top tier team in 2024, but now the signals are crossed following Burnes’ departure.
One Brewers player in particular did not like this trade. He also indicated that another player could be next.

Following the trade William Contreras posted on social media a series of emojis as well as a statement. He posted a mad emoji, shocked emoji, and then said “get ready for the (Willy) Adames trade next”. His post has since been deleted.

Entering this off-season both Burnes and Adames were in similar spots from a team control standpoint as they have one year remaining before becoming free agents. This alone makes Adames a trade candidate either now or later on in the summer.
Another factor to take into consideration is that the Brewers currently have two MLB players who can handle shortstop. Brice Turang, who played second base last year, is excellent with the glove, has great range, and a strong throwing arm. Additionally Joey Ortiz, who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles, can handle everyday shortstop duties as well.
All of this points towards it being very likely that the Brewers trade Adames prior to him becoming a free agent. It will be interesting to see if that comes before Opening Day or during the season.
