There may not be a more disliked figure in Wisconsin right now than former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell. After spending nine seasons making everyone in the fanbase believe he was “one of you” and that he “was born to be a Brewer,” he ditched town to sign with the hated Chicago Cubs.
The decision infuriated Brewers fans, who saw it as nothing less than a betrayal. All of that talk about being the hometown kid living out his dream was simply a lie. He reportedly left even though Milwaukee was prepared to give him the biggest contract in MLB history for a manager. The Cubs, however, offered even more money and Counsell did not give the Brewers a chance to counter.
In short, he wanted out. It didn’t matter if Milwaukee had offered the same amount as the Cubs. He was leaving. His mind was made up even before the 2023 season began. One has to wonder how much better the Brewers might have done if their manager had been fully invested in their success instead of having one foot out the door all year.

And it certainly sounds like Counsell isn’t missing the people of Milwaukee either. During the Cubs’ spring training opener against the White Sox, the Whitefish Bay resident took a subtle jab at Brewers fans.
Chicago Cubs Manager Craig Counsell Takes a Jab at Milwaukee Brewers Fans
During an interview on the Cubs’ broadcast, Counsell was asked about the difference between being in Chicago spring training compared to Milwaukee’s. He responded,
“Huge crowd on day one so you know you’re in a different place, no question about it.”
A shot at Brewers’ fan attendance? A shot at the smallest market in baseball that still ranks among the best in baseball in regards to attendance every single year?
Fans didn’t like that comment.
