When Craig Counsell made the decision to leave the Milwaukee Brewers to go and manage the Chicago Cubs, it was viewed as one of the worst acts of betrayal in Wisconsin sports history. And for many, the initial sting of the news that Milwaukee’s home-grown, hometown, beloved son was leaving has not subsided.
Apparently, though, the sentiment is not shared by everyone. In an editorial published by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a Brewers “fan” named Marshal Eckblad wrote:
“As a lifelong Brewers fan, I am rooting for the Cubs this season.”
The entire piece is a long love letter to Counsell, praising his place in Brewers history and how he is such a more respectable person to root for over the players that he ruthlessly left behind. The author blames the front office, ownership, and even the fans for Counsell’s decision to leave.
And for these reasons, Mr. Eckblad is a Cubs fan this year. Well, Brewers fans on social media took this article about as well as one might expect.

There is no way to best introduce these reactions, so we will just let them speak for themselves:

The premise of this opinion piece is stupid.
But the writing style is truly offensive. How did this run in the Journal Sentinel? Are there no standards anymore? https://t.co/nAWcnXGmI7

The JSonline should be ashamed of this piece. Craig Counsell is not one of us. https://t.co/MONWYk2P15

Benedict Arnold will never ‘lose’ this community by deciding to work for people who treat him better. He is one of us, heck, he is the best of us.

That’s not how this works https://t.co/lth0VXAvhS

One of the most embarrassing opinion pieces I’ve ever read. It’s not about the money, supposedly! Aside from the Harvey Dent-esque caption, the overly fawning framing of Counsell as a great labor hero is nauseating. Craig has already said plenty to undercut that narrative too https://t.co/WwGetci3Vp

“the best of us” is not the argument you think it is. this is like saying the McChicken is the healthiest option https://t.co/fqYqyppLVZ

The JS is just letting any loser take on their website these days.
Also, Marshall Eckblad? Fake ass name. This is definitely Craig Counsell. https://t.co/eJcthuCM9h

My favorite is the one about Counesell being such a great labor hero. Mr. Eckblad says Counsell wanted to reset the market for all managers. He forgets that in order to do so with the Cubs, Counsell also caused the firing of David Ross, who has yet to be hired by a team for any coaching job.
Some labor hero.
