After a limited 7-3 loss in their first game of a three-game series with the San Diego Padres, and with Milwaukee Brewers left fielder Christian Yelich put on the 10-day IL, the Brewers faced a critical game in which if they lost that would be their first series loss of the 2024 regular season. Unfortunately, Milwaukee could not come back from the Padres four-run first inning as they fell 6-3.
The Brewers are in desperate need of a win, as they’re tied with both the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates for first place in the NL Central division. After starting off the season 5-1, Milwaukee is 5-5 in their last 10 games. They will need to collect some big-time wins if they want to stay ahead of their divisional rivals.
Milwaukee Brewers Face Critical Loss to Padres Losing Their First Series of the Season
The Padres got their first run across during the top of the first when San Diego’s third baseman Manny Machado hit into an RBI groundout. Just a batter later, Padres shortstop Ha-Seong Kim blasted a three-run home run off of the left field pole, giving his team a quick 4-0 lead.
During the bottom of the first, Brewers clean-up hitter first baseman Jake Bauers ripped an RBI double into the right field corner to cut San Diego’s lead to now 4-1. After a run-filled first inning, we would not see any scoring take place again until the top of the seventh inning when Padres catcher Luis Campusano hit an RBI single in front of Milwaukee’s right fielder Jackson Chourio. In the next at-bat, San Diego’s center fielder Jackson Merrill scored another run by hitting an RBI groundout. This now gave the Padres a dominating 6-1 lead with two and a half innings left to play.
Brewers Score Two More Runs; Not Enough to Get the Win
At the bottom of the seventh inning, Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras crushed an RBI single in front of Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Two innings later, Contreras received another RBI on a force out. The Brewers could not get a rally started in the bottom half of the ninth inning, giving the Padres a 6-3 win, their second win of this series, which means the Brewers officially lost their first series of the 2024 regular season.
Stats & Performances from the Brewers Loss
Brewers starting pitcher Wade Miley pitched just three innings. Allowing three runs on four hits, and two walks while striking out two batters in the loss. Even though William Contreras had two RBIs in the loss, Milwaukee center fielder Sal Frelick had a great day at the plate going three for four. For San Diego, starting pitcher Dylan Cease pitched six innings allowing one run on two hits, while walking five and with seven strikeouts. Ha-Seong Kim was the unsung hero for this Padres team, as his three-run home run in the first inning is what ultimately elevated his team to the win. Milwaukee needs to find a way to win, if not it will be their fourth consecutive loss.
