The Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles recently agreed to a trade that sent former Cy Young award winner Corbin Burnes out east. In exchange for one year of his services the Brew Crew acquired two Orioles prospects in DL Hall and Joey Ortiz. They were unable to acquire any of Baltimore’s prospects ranked within their top five.
Over the course of this off-season there has been lots of reported trade interest in Corbin Burnes. One of those teams was unsurprisingly the New York Yankees. Recently Jon Heyman and Andy Martino revealed why the Yankees did not go through with a trade.
Per reports the Milwaukee Brewers wanted top ranked New York Yankees prospect Spencer Jones.

Andy Martino of SNY was able to confirm that the Yankees had an interest in trading for Corbin Burnes. He also relayed that they were disappointed they didn’t get him and that they felt like the asking price was too much. Jon Heyman then revealed that outfielder Spencer Jones is one player that Milwaukee wanted.

In 2022 the Yankees selected Spencer Jones 25th overall. The Vanderbilt product started off as a two-way player but underwent tommy john surgery in 2020. At the plate the 6’6″ lefty has great bat speed, excellent exit velocities, and power is his highest grade at 55. Milwaukee selected shortstop Eric Brown Jr two picks after Jones was taken in the 2022 mLB draft, so it’s possible that the Brewers had their eyes on Jones at that time.

2023 was his first full year in affiliated baseball and the 22 year old spent the majority of the year in High-A. He got his feet wet in Double-A at the end of the year. Overall he slashed .267/.336/.444 with 16 home runs, 66 RBI, and 43 stolen bases.
