The Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles each had a few big story lines heading into Sunday’s series finale at Camden Yards. Both sides had impressive team streaks on the line, Corbin Burnes was facing his former team for the first time since being traded, and the number one prospect in baseball was searching for his first career big league hit.
The Baltimore Orioles kept an impressive team streak intact while ending one of the Milwaukee Brewers.
A 6-4 Orioles victory on Sunday prevented them from being swept. By avoiding the sweep Baltimore now has not been swept in 96 consecutive regular season series where at least three games were played. On the other hand Milwaukee had a streak of scoring at least seven runs snapped. Entering play on Sunday they had tied a franchise record of scoring at least seven runs in six consecutive ball games.
Corbin Burnes faced the Milwaukee Brewers for the first time since being traded.
On the hill Sunday was Corbin Burnes. He was traded to Baltimore this last February and got the opportunity to pitch against several of his former teammates. His old catcher William Contreras took him deep on the second pitch of the game and then the Brewers were able to manufacture two more runs off of him. After all was said and done Burnes covered five innings, allowed six hits, walked two, struck out five, and threw 98 total pitches.
Jackson Holliday got his first MLB hit.
After much anticipation Jackson Holliday finally collected his first big league hit. He started off 0-13 with nine strikeouts, but a clutch single in the seventh inning off of Abner Uribe made the ball park erupt in excitement. Holliday did ground out in his final at-bat and is 1-15 to begin his career.
Other Brewers vs Orioles game notes.
- The Brewers manufactured a few runs off of Corbin Burnes. In the third inning, with runners on the corners and two outs, Sal Frelick took off for second base and intentionally got in a run down. Blake Perkins was able to cross home plate before Frelick was tagged out.
- Milwaukee scored their final run off of Burnes via a bunt single from Brice Turang. Burnes fielded the ball and his throw to first base was wild. A run scored as a result.
- The Brewers did not get timely hits in this contest as they finished 2-17 with runners in scoring position.
- Abner Uribe, who previously had taken charge as the closer with Devin Williams out, came on to pitch in the seventh inning. He gave up three consecutive hits to begin the inning and ultimately got charged with a blown save and a loss.
