Milwaukee Brewers southpaw Aaron Ashby under went shoulder surgery earlier this year. The last update on his progress was provided in mid July in which at that time there was optimism that he could return this year as a relief pitcher. Now a month later, mid August, Craig Counsell has shed some light on one significant obstacle that is impacting his return.

Aaron Ashby has one significant obstacle in his recovery that the Milwaukee Brewers have to make a decision on soon.
Both Adam McCalvy and Curt Hogg relayed similar updates on Aaron Ashby prior to the start of the Brewers series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The summary was that he is throwing live BP’s in Arizona and that his arm feels great. However his velocity has not yet returned.
A season ago Ashby’s sinker averaged 95.7 MPH, changeup 89.1 MPH, and slider 83.5 MPH. Despite his current velocities not being up to par Craig Counsell did not indicate that there was a set back or plateau in his build up. Rather the Brewers manager was pleased with how he was responding to competing and throwing live again.
Unfortunately the clock is currently ticking because there are just six weeks of regular season games left and a full velocity return may not be possible. Pretty soon the Brewers will have to make a decision on if they will continue with foundation building or start him on a minor league rehab assignment.
