Milwaukee Brewers 2023 Draft: With less than one week to go before this year’s MLB draft let’s take a look at the latest mock from MLB Pipeline.
This year the Brewers have the 18th overall selection. They did not gain any ground in the first ever draft lottery, but there will still be plenty of exceptional players remaining when they get to pick. In MLB Pipelines June 29 mock draft they had them selecting the son of a former big league All-Star.
Milwaukee Brewers 2023 MLB Draft: Latest mock has them selecting Jacob Wilson, son of former big league All-Star Jack Wilson.
Jack Wilson was an All-Star with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2004 and was in the National League Central from 2001-2008. In ’04 he hit for a .308 batting average and had more triples (12) than home runs (11). He was also awarded a Silver Slugger for his offensive performance as a shortstop.
Now Jack Wilson has a son named Jacob Wilson who also plays shortstop. Jacob attended Grand Canyon University, was a freshman All-American, and posted insane batting averages. His freshman year (2021) he had a .313 batting average, 2022 that rose to .358, and this year an outstanding .411.
Leading into the draft Jacob Wilson’s highest graded tool is hit (65). He is starting to tap more into his power and has the skill set to stick at shortstop. On MLB’s website he is ranked as the 10th best prospect in baseball, but there is a chance that he could fall to the Brewers at 18.
If he is available and the Brewers select him it would continue their recent trend of selecting college bats in the first round.
A few other college bats that could be available and were previously covered on WI Sports Heroics are Braden Taylor out of Texas Christian University and Brock Wilken from Wake Forest.
This year the MLB draft will take place from July 7-9.
