The Green Bay Packers may want to start thinking long-term at the edge rusher position. Lukas Van Ness is the easy answer when it comes to what the team plans to do after Preston Smith (who will turn 31 in November). However, the Packers have made it clear they are willing to commit a lot of resources to the edge rusher position. Trading for a star edge rusher may not be out of the question.
Green Bay Packers Land Brian Burns From The Carolina Panthers In Massive Trade Proposal

According to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, the Carolina Panthers and linebacker Brian Burns were not close to an extension when he covered training camp in Spartanburg almost one month ago. Apparently, no real headway has been made so far on the issue, if there has been any in the first place.
As mentioned during Saturday’s edition of SportsCenter, Fowler provided us with an update on the talks (if you want to call it that):
“They’ve been talkin’ for months. They are not at all close on a deal,” he said. “He’s gonna play games. But, yeah, frustration could boil over a little bit here eventually. This is an elite player.”
Trade speculations have been swirling all off-season, and this latest “report” only added fuel to the fire. That is where the Packers could come in.
The Packers were in talks with the Indianapolis Colts about acquiring Jonathan Taylor. It was also reported that they were willing to commit to a large contract as well. If they would be willing to do the same for an edge rusher, it could make this defense that much scarier. Here is the trade proposal we had in mind:
Green Bay Packers Receive:
- Edge Rusher Brian Burns
Carolina Panthers Receive:
- 2024 Conditional Second Round Draft Pick That Becomes A First If Aaron Rodgers Plays 65% Of His Snaps In 2023
- 2024 Fourth Round Draft Pick
- 2025 Sixth Round Pick
This trade would be similar to what the Bears got for linebacker Roquan Smith. The Ravens gave up a 2023 second round pick, fifth-round pick, and linebacker A.J Klein to get Smith.
Over the course of his four-year tenure in the NFL, Burns has missed just two games. According to Pro Football Reference, since the beginning of his career, he has amassed a total of 38 sacks and 121 quarterback pressures, a rate that has improved with each passing year, reaching a career-high of 12.5 sacks in 2022. He also has 11 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown on his resumé.
