Green Bay Packers: San Francisco 49ers DC Drops Eye-Opening Comparison on Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love-Led Offenses

For San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, the Green Bay Packers’ offense has really evolved after the departure of Aaron Rodgers and since Jordan Love took over.

When asked to share his observation on the Packers’ offense and how it seems to be molded by Matt LaFleur’s system rather than something built for Rodgers, Wilks admitted that the biggest change has been how Green Bay has been more committed to the run game.

Basically, with Rodgers, the Packers often relied on the passing game to win games because they have an experienced quarterback who had done it a lot of times. With Love who just became a fulltime starter this season and still gaining experience, LaFleur knew he has to diversify the offense.

While that’s not to say that Love cannot reach the same level as Rodgers, the fact of the matter is the Packers needed to change and have a more holistic approach when scoring if they want to win. Sure enough, that has worked for them.

“Well, I think you can see he’s doing an excellent job. Number one, he’s committed to the run game. That’s the consistency there,” Wilks said of Matt LaFleur and the Packers’ attack, via 49ers WebZone.

“I think at times when you have a first-ballot Hall of Famer, a guy like that who can throw the ball 55 or 60 times and go win you a game is different. But now, not saying that Love can’t do that, but LaFleur is dedicated and committed to running the ball and it shows which allows and opens up different things for the offense to be very productive. So, I see that being the difference.”

As Steve Wilks said, that’s no disrespect or knock to Jordan Love. He’s a really talented quarterback who is on his path to superstardom. Nonetheless, there’s no denying that the Green Bay Packers’ offense has thrived with their new approach.

Just look at how the Packers obliterated the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round, scoring 41 points through three quarters before settling for the 48-32 victory.

Green Bay Packers’ Offense Has More Communication

For what it’s worth, Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich also recently commented about the change in their offense under Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love, highlighting that there’s more communication now than in years past.

“There is definitely value to that. Because half the time, when you are done with the drive, sometimes in past years you’d just be trying to figure out what play was called. So now we know what was supposed to happen,” Stenavich explained. “But with Aaron he would see stuff and make checks and all that, that you didn’t know exactly what was happening at the time. But with this, yeah, we’re on the same page and going.

“Not to say that way wasn’t good because we had results with it, but this is nice because you can kind build on offense around it, build plays off plays. As the game progressed, hey, we did this, now we’re going to do this, now we’re going to do this. I think our communication on the sideline has been better just from that aspect of being able to, as the game progresses, have plays off of plays and things like that. Yeah, that’s a huge advantage this year.”

It’s definitely interesting to see and hear how big of a change the Packers underwent with Love taking over as QB1. At the end of the day, though, what’s important is that Green Bay has been able to build continuity when it comes to their offense despite the fact that it’s always hard to replace an all-time great.

It remains to be seen if the 49ers can figure out the Packers offense and slow them down, but it’s definitely going to take a lot…that is if the can actually pull it off.
