In Saturday night’s game, the Green Bay Packers failed to defeat the San Francisco 49ers over a missed 41-yard field goal by Anders Carlson. Instead, the Brock Purdy-led squad took over the final stretch of the game to steal the win.
The Packers’ rookie missed his chance to bury the 49ers by extending their four-point lead at the time. This led San Francisco to steal the game, thanks to a touchdown made possible by a Christian McCaffrey rush.
This development gave Jordan Love a little more than a minute to come up with a game-winning play of his own. However, the quarterback’s throw to no one was the final nail in the coffin for the Packers’ chances of making the Super Bowl this season.
Matt LaFleur Gets Real on Anders Carlson After Heartbreaking Loss to the San Francisco 49ers
After the game, Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur was asked about Anders Carlson’s missed field goal. Although the rookie’s performance this season has been disappointing, there’s still hope for him to become better soon.
According to Ryan Wood of USA Today:
“We’ve just got to work on the consistency. We’ve seen him do it, we know he’s capable, but you’ve got to be consistent in order to last in this league.”
As mentioned by LaFleur, Carson needs to work on his consistency, as he has seen him do it and knows what the rookie is capable of. LaFleur added that he also needs to be more consistent to last in the league.
Speaking of consistency, Carlson’s performance was already an issue dating back to training camp. For their part, the Packers remained patient with the rookie, even with fans losing patience with him. That all changed when the team made the playoffs, especially with his poor showing against the San Francisco 49ers.
Without a doubt, there will be pressure on Carlson this summer to prove why he should be the Packers’ primary kicker. And with LaFleur emphasizing consistency, all eyes will be on the rookie to improve sooner than later.
