Even though the season has already ended for the Green Bay Packers, there have been several moves made that aim to improve the team’s performance in the coming months. One of these moves is hiring Jeff Hafley as a defensive coordinator.
The Packers turned heads last season when the league’s youngest roster reached the playoffs before being eliminated by the San Francisco 49ers, the top-seeded squad in the league. This comes after Aaron Rodgers was traded, making Jordan Love the franchise’s quarterback for this season.
But instead of falling down the standings, Green Bay was able to contend this year, mostly due to the leap Love took as the team’s quarterback. Unfortunately, the Packers suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of San Francisco, ending their season in the process.
Nevertheless, the future looks bright for the Packers, especially if the team improves via the draft or signing free agents to improve the roster in the offseason.
Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy Details How Jeff Hafley Was Hired
In order to accomplish that goal of improving, a decision to hire Jeff Hafley was made. Green Bay Packers CEO and president Mark Murphy details how that decision came to be in his monthly newsletter.
While Matt LaFleur received input from Brian Gutekunst, myself and others, he has full control over his coaching staff and made the final decision. I was very impressed with the way Matt conducted the search. We interviewed many candidates, both by Zoom and in person, and Jeff rose to the top. His work both in the NFL and at Boston College was impressive.
Although Matt and Jeff have never coached together, they have many mutual acquaintances who spoke highly of Jeff. Also, my roommate on the Redskins, Pete Cronan, a Boston College alumnus and the longtime radio voice of Boston College football, was very impressed with Jeff and the work he did at Boston College.
Hafley’s hiring is expected to bolster the team’s performance on the defensive end of the field. With Love expected to get better next season, there’s no reason this move by the Packers will yield dividends for the team.
