The Green Bay Packers run this season has surprised a lot of people, especially when considering they’re the youngest roster in the NFL. The thing is, the team can still get better, and it might involve letting Christian Watson and Kenny Clark go.
The key detail to keep in mind here is that Jordan Love is the end-all-be-all for the Packers next season. As seen by his first full campaign as the team’s primary quarterback after Aaron Rodgers was traded, the 25-year old is definitely the future of this franchise.
Even though Love’s crucial mistake sealed the San Francisco 49ers’ ticket to advance to the NFC championship, the growth he has shown all season long is reason enough to build around him fast. Of course, that involves getting young talent via the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, an event wherein Green Bay has eight draft picks at its disposal.
Another route the Packers can take is free agency and signing key players from other teams right away. But in order to make room for these guys, certain members of the roster will definitely be let go.
Green Bay Packers Projected To Deal Christian Watson and Kenny Clark This 2024 Offseason
This train of thought is exactly what the Packers are projected to have when the offseason starts. According to an article by Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department:
“Longtime left tackle David Bakhtiari will likely be released if he isn’t dealt. He’s 33 and knee issues have limited him to only 13 games over the past three seasons. Bakhtiari’s market may be limited to Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, but Green Bay would be foolish not to kick the tires on a deal,” the Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department wrote.
Although Bakhtiari’s name comes first, the following guys may see more demand in the market than he does.
“Defensive tackle Kenny Clark, meanwhile, is a terrific player, but he is entering the final year of his contract. He’d likely bring a better return than Bakhtiari, and trading him after June 1 would save $21 million in cap space. Receiver and 2022 second-round pick Christian Watson has fallen out of favor in the offense as other young pass-catchers like Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks have risen. It’s worth seeing if another team is willing to take a flier on Watson,” the article added
Dealing these three players away, particularly Clark and Watson, may yield dividends to the Packers in the offseason. If Green Bay plays its cards right during that period, the roster will be a better one than what it is now. In the process, the Jordan Love-squad may get over the hump and surprise everybody again by reaching the Super Bowl.
