The Green Bay Packers are, once again, entering their next game with a battered and beat up group of players. Earlier today, the team announced that cornerback Eric Stokes had been added to the injured list and ruled out for the game. Not long after, they placed the oft-injured third-year player on season-ending injured reserve and signed defensive back Benny Sapp III to the 53-man roster.
Of course, defensive back was going to be a big question mark for the Packers anyway on Sunday. Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander was suspended by Green Bay for conduct detrimental to the team. Now the Packers face the prospect of having to defend star Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson without their top two cornerbacks.
Unfortunately, defensive back is not the only position that is dealing with significant losses this week. While star rookie wide receiver Jayden Reed is going to play after missing the Packers’ 33-30 win over the Carolina Panthers, fellow rookie wideout Dontayvion Wicks is questionable with a chest injury. Additionally, second-year wideout Christian Watson is listed as doubtful as he works his way back from a hamstring injury he suffered against the Kansas City Chiefs.
With Reed and Romeo Doubs as their only healthy wide receivers among their top four players at the position, the Packers to elevate a familiar face for the game on Sunday.
The Green Bay Packers Elevated Wide Receiver Bo Melton for Matchup with the Minnesota Vikings
Just as they did last week when Reed was out, the Packers made the decision to elevate wide receiver Bo Melton from the practice squad. This is Melton’s second elevation from the practice squad. He has played in three games for the Packers this season.
In last week’s win over the Panthers, Melton came up big for the Packers, especially after Wicks went out with a chest injury. He had four receptions (on six targets) for 44 yards. Additionally, Melton had one carry for seven yards, giving him 51 total yards on the day.
With Reed and Doubs starting, the Packers will likely use Melton, Samori Toure, and Malik Heath again. However, Toure and Heath combined for just three targets last week and no catches. Still, with this young group of pass catchers, no one really knows who will be the next one to step up and have a big game.
