The Green Bay Packers have the youngest and most inexpensive wide receiver room in the NFL this season. This is because they chose to roll with their three wide receivers from last year (Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure) and three rookies (Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Malik Heath). Of course, this went hand-in-hand with the decision to move on from four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers in favor of 2020 first round pick Jordan Love.
The youthfulness and inexperience of the wide receiver position, to go along with the new starting quarterback, meant that there would be growing pains throughout the 2023 NFL season. And growing pains there were! Even though the Packers are flying high right now after winning three of their past four games, their recent hot streak came on the heels of a four-game losing streak.
As it stands, Reed currently leads the team with 497 receiving yards. Doubs, a fourth round pick last season, leads the team with seven touchdown receptions.
And those seven touchdowns are the starting point at a look at one of the strangest statistical seasons in the NFL this season.
How Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Romeo Doubs Compares to Other NFL Leaders in Touchdown Receptions
As mentioned, Doubs has seven touchdown receptions this season, which is good for a tie for fifth in the NFL. Here is complete list of the players that have at least seven touchdowns this season:
- Tyreek Hill (Miami Dolphins): 10
- Mike Evans (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): 9
- Stefon Diggs (Buffalo Bills): 8
- Courtland Sutton (Denver Broncos): 8
- Keenan Allen (Los Angeles Chargers): 7
- AJ Brown (Philadelphia Eagles): 7
- Romeo Doubs (Green Bay Packers): 7
- Tank Dell (Houston Texans): 7
- Jordan Addison (Minnesota Vikings (7)
As one can see, Doubs is in very good company in regards to the number of touchdowns he has scored. That alone would be enough to make this season a special one. However, what is absolutely wild about Doubs’ presence on the list is his yards and yards per game numbers compared to the others:
- Hill: 1,324/120.0
- Evans: 850/77.3
- Diggs: 969/80.8
- Sutton: 560/60.9
- Allen: 1,117/101.5
- Brown: 1,050/95.5
- Doubs: 433/39.4
- Dell: 709/70.9
- Addison: 647/58.8
As one can see, Doubs has by far the fewest receiving yards and receiving yards per game of any receiver in the top five in the NFL in touchdown receptions.
Well, stats only tell part of the story right? PFF (love it or hate it) does its best to grade players by their overall performance regardless of stats. But even in terms of PFF grades, Doubs’ presence on the list of players with the most touchdown passes this season does not make much sense.
Here are the top touchdown catchers in the NFL with their PFF receiving grade and where it ranks among wide receivers:
- Hill: 93.3 (1st)
- Evans: 82.1 (15th)
- Diggs: 82.0 (16th)
- Sutton: 73.3 (41st)
- Allen: 87.1 (8th)
- Brown: 90.9 (3rd)
- Doubs: 70.0 (56th)
- Dell: 83.6 (13th)
- Addison: 72.1 (49th)
As one can see, both Sutton and Addison have PFF grades far below the others on the list, but they are still ranked higher than Doubs.
So what does this mean, exactly? Probably nothing other than the fact that Doubs has a knack for being in the right place at the right time when it comes to scoring in the red zone.
It also means that Doubs is making the most of his opportunities. Last season, he had nine drops in 13 games played and a drop percentage of 13.4%. This season, he has only one dropped pass and drop rate of 1.4%.
It would seem that Doubs, like the rest of the Packers’ offense, is on the rise.

Even more than yards or PFF grades, I’d bet he has the fewest catches of those on that list, thus the highest ratio of catches to TDs (which says more about how Love feels about him in the clutch).
I should hope that players with 75 to 100 catches would have 10% TDs.
7/41 for Doubs is far more impressive. Dell is the only one close, with 47 catches on way less snaps, but he’s also built like a very tiny halfback and is used more like one than as a WR.
