The Green Bay Packers dropped a disappointing game to the New York Giants 24-22 on Monday Night. Now 6-7, the Packers still hold onto the final NFC Playoff spot, and still control their postseason destiny. Of course, the easiest way for them to make the NFL Playoffs this season is for them to win their remaining four games.
This is, indeed, a good thing. All the Packers have to do is defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears. This is easier said than done, but it presents a very possible and clear path for their return to postseason play.
Unfortunately, Green Bay is struggling with injuries, just as they have all season long. Last night, one more receiving weapon went down. Dontayvion Wicks injured his ankle, and he believes it is a high ankle sprain.
The Wicks injury is just one more devastating blow to the offense that has already lost Christian Watson to a hamstring injury. With their receiving core getting thinner and thinner, Bleacher Report believes they should reunite with a familiar face.
Bleacher Report Claims the Green Bay Packers Should Re-Sign Wide Receiver Sammy Watkins
With Watson and Wicks hurt and their status for Week 15 in question, Bleacher Report believes that the Packers should look to the current free agent market to add some depth at wide receiver. Their solution is Sammy Watkins, who spent part of the 2022 season with Green Bay.
“Christian Watson suffered a hamstring injury against the Kansas City Chiefs last week, and the timeline for his return remains unclear. Head coach Matt LaFleur said he’d hopefully be back “sooner rather than later” when speaking to the media on Thursday.
“It could be good to have a veteran wideout on hand for the late-season playoff push, and Watkins has a similar profile to Watson as a bigger receiver who can win down the field. The nine-year pro spent a good portion of the 2022 campaign in Green Bay, meaning he should have some familiarity/chemistry with Jordan Love.”
Their argument for Watkins on the Packers makes some sense. After all, he does have familiarity with the offense and, if Wicks and Watson cannot play on Sunday, Green Bay will be desperately shallow at wide receiver.
The Green Bay Packers Should Not Re-Sign Sammy Watkins
Watkins is currently a free agent that is not on the practice squad of any NFL team. Last season, he had 13 receptions for 206 yards in nine games with the Packers. After they released him, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens and had three receptions for 119 yards in three games.
If the Packers feel they need an extra wide receiver for Sunday, they will likely look to Bo Melton on their own practice squad. After all, he has been working in the Packers’ system for over a year as opposed to Watkins who spent a few months in the system last year.
Furthermore, if Watkins still had something worth contributing, he would at least be on a NFL practice squad. As mentioned, he is not. Sure, the familiarity with LaFleur’s offense makes some sense, but given where the Packers are in the season and what they have done in the past (in addition to Watkins’ own injury history), a reunion between Watkins and Green Bay is highly unlikely.
