The Green Bay Packers have shocked the NFL world. After starting the season 3-6 and being off the radar for most playoff caliber NFL teams, the Packers are now one of the final eight remaining teams in the league. Four consecutive wins have not only propelled the Packers into the playoffs, but into the divisional round.
It won’t get any easier for the Packers, however, as their next game is a date with the San Francisco 49ers in California. One former Packers coach will, unfortunately, be watching Saturday’s game wondering where his NFL career will take him next.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterbacks Coach Loses His Job Amid The Start Of The Divisional Round Of The Playoffs
According to ESPN’s Jake Trotter:
The Cleveland Browns have parted ways with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, he confirmed to ESPN.
“On to the next one,” he said in a text message. “Proud of my time there.”
According to multiple team sources, the team and Van Pelt discussed a reassignment of roles on the coaching staff, but ultimately the two sides decided to part ways.
A Browns spokesperson said earlier Wednesday that Van Pelt “remains under contract and no final decisions yet.”
In a staff shakeup, the Browns have fired running backs coach Stump Mitchell and decided not to renew the contract of tight ends coach T.C. McCartney.
Mitchell had been on Cleveland’s staff since 2019, a year before head coach Kevin Stefanski arrived. McCartney came to Cleveland with Stefanski in 2020.
Though Stefanski has been Cleveland’s primary playcaller, Van Pelt had held the title of offensive coordinator since 2020. Before that, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers.
Alex Van Pelt Has A History With The Packers
Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who was Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach from 2014 to 2017, was relieved of his duties.
Mike McCarthy, now the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was Van Pelt’s only head coach in Green Bay.
During his time with Green Bay, the Packers went to the NFC Championship twice as well as had three straight winning seasons. It was a bit surprising to see the Browns move on from him as the team found a ton of success after Joe Flacco took over as the starting quarterback. On top of that, the Browns clinched a playoff berth (although they were blown out by Houston in the Wild Card round).
Van Pelt will surely draw interest from around the league.
