Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams sat down with MLB Central on MLB Network where he touch on a wide-range of topics: such as his affinity to playing in New York to what he routine looks like before he pitches.
Williams says “I start my prep work in the top of the 6th inning, and then it’s just getting activated; getting my mind right start to lock in and get ready for that ninth.”
Williams also shared the history of his changeup.
He said his changeup “has always been my best secondary pitch,” and he didn’t throw it in high school because he was speeding people’s bats up so he threw mainly fastballs and sliders. Williams started to hone in on using his changeup when he was coming up through pro ball.
Williams on who taught him the changeup:
“I would say self-taught trial and error; trying different grips, try to make the ball do different things and it clicked one day.” Williams explained his process started with playing catch, and then took that practice to the mound.
I would say the process has worked as opponents are only batting .140 and a 41.1 percent whiff percentage against Williams when he throws his changeup. (Via StatCast.)
