The Green Bay Packers have announced they are planning on signing their top free agent target to a multi-year deal.
Xavier McKinney, a dynamic safety who captained the New York Giants defense, has agreed to a contract with the Packers. McKinney will ink a four-year, $68-million deal with the Packers when he can officially sign this Wednesday. The Packers worked quickly to improve their hole at safety after allowing former starter Darnell Savage to walk in free agency.
Green Bay Packers Intend to Sign Safety Xavier McKinney to $68-Million Deal
The Green Bay Packers have announced a massive free agent signing as they have agreed to terms with safety Xavier McKinney. McKinney agreed to a four-year, $68-million deal with the Packers after the Giants allowed the defensive back to hit the market. The Packers suffered from a lack of quality safety play last season, and wanted to address their issues in a big way.
McKinney recorded 78 solo tackles, a forced fumble, and three interceptions last season as he displayed his versatility. From playing as the lone deep safety to stacking the box with the linebackers, McKinney can do it all on the defensive side of the field.
Injuries kept McKinney back during his first and third years with the Giants, but when healthy the safety proved to be one of the better defensive backs in the league. McKinney also adds an intelligent, veteran presence to the team as he previously served as a captain for the Giants defense.
The Green Bay Packers Locked-In Their Top Free Agent Target this Off-Season
The Packers have now locked-in their top two free agency targets with the signings of McKinney and Jacobs agreed upon in principle. Likely, the next move for the Packers will be trying to secure an offensive lineman after allowing Jon Runyan to sign with the Giants. Runyan had started 50 out of a possible 51 games since taking over as a starter for the Packers, but will now play the next three seasons in New York.
Both Kevin Zeitler and Connor Williams could be potential free agent options for the Green Bay Packers moving forward as they look for a replacement along the line.
Are the Green Bay Packers Football Operations Done with the Free Agent Signings?
The Packers have worked quickly this off-season and there is no doubt about that, but it may not be all for Green Bay. While the Packers secured two big deals with Jacobs and McKinney, there are still plenty of areas the Packers would like to improve upon. Green Bay could realistically just be getting started at this point, but it is still unclear who else the team is targeting.
