During the Brewers broadcast, play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson indicated that Burnes will still attend the All-Star game, but will not pitch. No official reasoning was provided as towards what made Burnes opt out of pitching during the mid summer classic.
Burnes may have decided not to pitch because he likely will start the first game back after the All-Star break. For the Brewers that is Friday night. He also was a long shot to get the honor of being the starting pitcher for the game. Clayton Kershaw, Tony Gonsolin, and Sandy Alcantara are the favorites to start the game for the National League.
In his last performance, Burnes pitched spectularly. During that game he struck out 10 batters and became the franchise leader in 10+ strikeout games with 19. He surpassed Yovani Gallardo for the franchise record. The Brewers will be counting on Burnes to continue to pitch well throughout the remainder of the season.
For the Brewers, both Burnes and Josh Hader have opted out of participating in the All-Star game this year. Thankfully Devin Williams was added on and will be the lone Brewer representing the team. The All-Star game is Tuesday night and will be held in Los Angeles.
