The Milwaukee Brewers are 14-7 on the season following their 4-2 loss in game one of their early season series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joe Ross pitched into the sixth inning, allowing just one run (a solo shot to one-time Brewer Andrew McCutchen to lead of the game). Poor defense in the infield allowed three unearned runs to score after Ross departed and the difference was too great for Milwaukee’s offense to overcome.
Perhaps the biggest loss of the day, though, came in the form of unfortunate injury news surrounding two of the Brewers’ starting pitchers. Indeed, starting pitching depth has been a concern since the offseason with the Corbin Burnes trade to the Baltimore Orioles and Brandon Woodruff’s shoulder injury that will keep him out until 2025.
Milwaukee Brewers Pitchers Wade Miley and Jakob Junis Were the Subjects of Unfortunate Injury News
Prior to game one of the series in Pittsburgh, news broke that left-handed starter Wade Miley was being placed on the 15-day IL. In his previous start, Miley was hit in the knee by a line drive. However, the injury designation for him is elbow inflammation.
In addition, right-handed starter Jakob Junis (pictured above) was hit by a fly ball during batting practice. Already on IL, Junis was taken to the hospital for observation, though he was alert and responsive when taken away in an ambulance. It has yet to be determined how much longer he will be out.
Both of these injuries came on the heels of left-handed rookie starter DL Hall being placed on IL with a sprained knee that he suffered during Milwaukee’s 12-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend.
Tobias Myers Will Make His Major League Debut for the Milwaukee Brewers
When the Brewers placed Miley on IL, their corresponding roster move was to recall right-handed pitcher Tobias Myers from Triple-A Nashville. Myers was called up earlier this season, but did not appear in a game before being sent back down.
Today, the Brewers announced on social media that Myers will get the start in game two of their series in Pittsburgh. Once a sixth round pick by the Orioles in 2016, it will be the 25-year old’s Major League debut:

In four games (three starts) with the Sounds, Myers is 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA. He also leads Nashville in strikeouts with 22 (in 16.2 innings pitched).
Tobias Myers Struggled in the Minor Leagues Before Joining the Milwaukee Brewers Organization
As mentioned previously, Myers was originally a sixth round pick by the Orioles back in 2016. At the time of his selection, he was just 17 years old.
In eight minor league seasons, Myers has spent time with Baltimore, the Tampa Bay Rays, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Guardians, and Chicago White Sox organizations. In 2022, a year he split between the White Sox, Giants, and Guardians, Myers was 1-15 with a 7.82 ERA.
After signing a minor league deal with Milwaukee in 2023, he went 10-5 with a 4.93 ERA with most of his experience coming with Double-A Biloxi. Perhaps what was the most intriguing part about his season last year was the fact that he had 175 strikeouts in just 140.2 innings pitched.
As mentioned previously, Myers is off to a fantastic start this year down in Nashville. That being said, he is still working on his command. In addition to his 11.9 strikeouts per nine innings, he is also giving up 3.8 walks per nine innings.
While Milwaukee likely would have rather had Myers spend more time at Triple-A before having him make his Major League debut. Unfortunately, the number of injuries that they have experienced in the starting rotation have forced their hand.
In short, Myers has some nasty stuff, but may be a little wild.
