Wisconsin Football is still in the thick of spring practices and will conclude April 22 with The Launch. There’s will be a few months off, and then fall camp will begin in early August. It’s still fresh in the Luke Fickell era, but SMU transfer Tanner Mordecai has had a solid spring, according to media members who have attended practice. He’s showing why he’s the perfect option at quarterback for the Badgers in 2023.
Tanner Mordecai Has Experience In an Explosive Offense
Tanner Mordecai is not new to what an explosive offense is. Over the last two seasons at SMU, he threw 72 touchdowns. That is an insane number and a stat Wisconsin has not even been close to achieving since the Russell Wilson season in 2011.
The SMU offense averaged 36 points a game last season to go along with 316 passing yards a game and 472 total yards a game. If you’re going to be a successful explosive offense, you need to have a signal caller with experience in one. It’s a brand new offense for the Badgers, and it’s beginning to show they have the right player to lead the offense this year while the younger quarterbacks learn and prepare to be the guy in 2024.
Tanner Mordecai Rarely Makes Mistakes
No idea how good Tanner Mordecai will end up being, but the consistency he's played with the last 5 practices hasn't been common over the years at UW. The ball rarely hits the ground, he routinely makes the right decision and puts the throw where it needs to be.

Based on the above tweet from Heilprin, Tanner Mordecai has looked really good over the last handful of practices. He did start off a little slow, but he’s beginning to show why Wisconsin wanted him and why he’s been successful over the last two seasons.
An explosive offense only works if your quarterback takes care of it. If you have a turnover-prone signal caller, it doesn’t matter the arm or the talent. You have to be able to make good decisions. When the ball will fly around as much as it will this season, it’s even more important to have a veteran quarterback who can take reigns of the offense. Right now, it seems like that is what Mordecai is doing.
Leading An Overall Young Wisconsin Football Offense

Uw Football Spring Practice 9 March 25 2023
Wisconsin Football has a very young wide receiver room. While their offensive line and running backs are seasoned, the receivers will be the ones catching the ball. I like that the Badgers have a player like Tanner Mordecai because not only has he been good at protecting the ball, you know he is going to put his receivers in a spot where they will succeed.
It can be overwhelming as a young college football receiver. The pace is faster, and the quarterback is the best person who has ever thrown you the ball. The receivers should feel good they have a veteran quarterback who can help them with ball placement and put them in a position to be successful.
There will be some bumps along the way, but it seems the Badgers have the right signal caller in 2023. As a result, I think they have a good chance of being successful this season.
