The Wisconsin football team received interesting news this afternoon following an announcement from their upcoming bowl game opponent.
Jayden Daniels, the Heisman winning quarterback for the LSU Tigers, announced this afternoon he will not play against Wisconsin on New Years day. Daniels was responsible for 50 touchdowns this season for the Tigers and owned the highest quarterback rating in the NCAA at 95.7. Sophomore Garrett Nussmeier will start his first game for the Tigers as they take on the Wisconsin Badgers football team.
Wisconsin Football Expected to Play Against Former Four-Star Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier During Bowl Game
Following his incredible Heisman-winning season, the chances of star quarterback Jayden Daniels playing in a non-playoff bowl game became slim. Today, Daniels confirmed the theories of many analysts and officially announced he will opt out of the ReliaQuest Bowl on January 1st between LSU and Wisconsin football.
Daniels struggled a year ago after transferring from Arizona State to LSU following the hiring of Head Coach Brian Kelly. Since then, Daniels has led the Tigers to a 9-3 record this season despite having one of the worst defenses statistically.
With Daniels out, the next man up will step-in for the LSU Tigers, and that just happens to be former four-star recruit Garrett Nussmeier. The Louisiana native will make his first collegiate start in the biggest game of the season for the Tigers as the Wisconsin football team aims to win their 8th game. While Nussmeier has never started a game, he has had a decent amount of experience for the Tigers.
The backup quarterback for the Tigers has recorded 1325 yards, eight touchdowns, and six interceptions while also rushing for one touchdown. Nussmeier is primarily a pocket passer and likely will try to use his weapons at wide receiver against the Badgers in hopes of scoring long touchdowns.
A Look Ahead: How Does the Wisconsin Badgers Football Team Tackle LSU Without Jayden Daniels?
The Wisconsin football team has truly caught a major break ahead of their bowl game now that star quarterback Jayden Daniels is no longer playing. Daniels is not only a Heisman winning quarterback, but also one of the most versatile players in the country. The quarterback averaged 8.4 yards per carry this past season, which is the highest among qualified players in the nation.
Without Daniels, LSU will need to rely on their defense due to their struggles this season stopping opponents. The Tigers have allowed 27.8 points per game this season and have allowed 408.8 total yards per game. While Wisconsin football has struggled on offense, they will go up against one of the softest defenses they have faced this season.
If Wisconsin is able to control the Tigers offense without Daniels on the field, the Badgers can likely put up points against a defense in disarray.
