The Wisconsin basketball team has recorded a much-needed win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights behind key bench play.
Guards Kamari McGee and John Blackwell added 28 points for the Wisconsin basketball team off the bench as the Badgers took down Rutgers. Wisconsin got off to a slow start against Rutgers in the first half of play before a buzzer beater from guard AJ Storr gave the Badgers the lead heading into the half. The Badgers will now travel to play the #2 Purdue Boilermakers to end their regular season.
Wisconsin Basketball Takes Home a Much Needed Victory on Senior Night
During Senior night for forward Tyler Wahl, Wisconsin basketball received some extra motivation to go out and secure a win. The Badgers started off the game with a difficult performance on offense as Rutgers got out to a quick 22-13 lead behind big three-point shots. Guard John Blackwell scored five straight points for Wisconsin as he brought the Badgers back into range.
Wisconsin basketball held Rutgers to four points in the five minutes to end the first half of play. The second half of play was more of the same as the Scarlet Knights once again jumped out to an early lead, and held onto it for the next eight minutes. Wisconsin began to pull away after securing the lead, and finished the game off after Blackwell made a three-point shot to give the Badgers a 17-point lead.
Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Scores 28 Bench Points As Late Rally Brings Home a Win
The second half of play for the Wisconsin basketball team was the McGee and Blackwell show as the guards took over both sides of the ball. The Badgers had spent the last nine games without their key bench guard Kamari McGee due to a nasty ankle injury that left him in a boot. McGee was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field for Wisconsin and added a triple as his 11-point performance was crucial.
Blackwell added 17 points, eight rebounds, and two steals in 27-minutes of play off of the bench for Wisconsin. Blackwell had struggled the past few games shooting, but bounced back in an excellent way against Rutgers. His defense was also key for Wisconsin as both of his steals helped contribute to a Badgers’ run.
Can the Wisconsin Basketball Team Take Down the Purdue Boilermakers Away?
While the performance against the Scarlet Knights was enough to get the win, Wisconsin basketball still showed signs of their struggles. Wisconsin took a while to ignite their offense, but once it got rolling and the team felt confident, it was absolutely their game to win.
In order for Wisconsin to beat Purdue, they will need to count on not only the entire team performing, but also center Steven Crowl. Crowl exploded is a big way for Wisconsin basketball against Rutgers with a double-double performance with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Crowl will have the tough task of guarding Zach Edey against Purdue, but if he can produce Wisconsin could escape with a win.
