The Wisconsin Badgers found its new point guard for next season after Camren Hunter committed to the program after playing with Central Arkansas the last two seasons. Hunter committed to the program on Sunday. He told Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel by saying:
“I’m ready to get to work. Coach Gard likes my versatility – offensively and defensively. I can create for others as well as create for myself. I can guard the one, the two or the three, sometimes the four depending on how big he is. I’m very physical on defense.”
Hunter is a 6’3″ guard who weighs 200 lbs. He is from Bryant, Arkansas and it is interesting that he wanted to go away from his home state to somewhere in the midwest. Cameron Hunter missed all of last season because of a foot injury that he suffered in the month of October.
During the 2022-2023 season with the Central Arkansas Bears, he averaged 16.9 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.9 APG, 0.6 BPG, and 1.5 SPG. Camren Hunter also shot 42.3% from the field, 31.1% from three-point land, and 78.6% from the free-throw line. Hunter played in 30 games during that season with Central Arkansas.
Wisconsin Badgers Taking a Chance With Camren Hunter Coming To the Basketball Program
The Badgers are taking a risk on Hunter coming to the program after he missed all of last season with a foot injury. Wisconsin didn’t land the top prospects in the portal but if Camren Hunter is healthy, he will be very good for this basketball team.
This is the potential replacement for Chucky Hepburn next season and they will need to replace his scoring and also A.J. Storr’s scoring. Head coach Greg Gard was getting criticized by the fanbase for not landing any players in the portal before Hunter committed.
This was probably not the first option for them as they had other interests from other players who were on the portal. However, this will be Camren Hunter’s best chance to make the NCAA Tournament. Before Hunter committed to the program, many were thinking that incoming freshman Daniel Freitag was going to be the starting point guard next season but that might change now.
He also told the media about his football injury about how he feels by saying:
“I’ve been 100% since January.”
The Wisconsin Badgers hope that Camren Hunter is ready to go when the college basketball season begins in November. Wisconsin needs to get back to the NCAA Tournament next season also.
