There has been no doubt the Wisconsin basketball team has looked different over the course of the last handful of games since a key injury.
Junior guard Kamari McGee has averaged just under eight minutes a game this year for the Badgers, yet has made quite the impact. During a tough game against Indiana, McGee took two hard falls on the court before returning to the sideline with a walking boot. Since his injury at the start of February, Wisconsin basketball has lost more games than they have won.
Wisconsin Basketball Battles Against Maryland While Bench Guard Kamari McGee Looks On Injured
After suffering a difficult overtime loss against the Iowa Hawkeyes, Wisconsin basketball moved onto their next opponent in hopes of bouncing back. The Badgers faced off against the Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday night in Madison as they attempted to get their team back on track. Wisconsin was able to do just that as they walked away with the 74-70 victory, but it was not quite the performance the Badgers wanted.
Wisconsin played one of their sloppier games on both sides of the ball, allowing easy looks at the basket and turning the ball over 12 times. As Wisconsin struggled on defense, one of their top defenders looked on from the bench as he continued to recover from a difficult lower body injury. Guard Kamari McGee has played limited minutes this year, but has arguably had one of the biggest impacts for the Badgers as a role player.
Could Wisconsin Basketball Benefit from a McGee Comeback?
On January 19th against the Hoosiers, Kamari McGee launched himself into the air on two separate plays to make a defensive stop. On each play, McGee got up slowly and limped off the court in pain as he gave all he could for the Badgers. After the second fall, McGee went to the locker room and came back to the bench in a walking boot, which was not a good sign for Badgers’ fans.
After the game, Head Coach Greg Gard provided a week-long timetable for the return of the Junior guard, but did not express much hope that McGee would return soon. Now, almost a month later, McGee could make his comeback against the same team he injured himself against when Wisconsin basketball hosts Indiana on February 27th.
McGee began his collegiate career with the Green Bay Phoenix before transferring to the Wisconsin basketball program a season ago. The guard averaged 11.6 points and 1.1 steals per game before announcing his intentions, and has since become a contributor off the bench for the Badgers. While McGee does not light up the score board for Wisconsin, he provides much needed defense and rest for starters like Max Klesmit and Chucky Hepburn.
A Look Ahead: Wisconsin Badgers Basketball Enters Tough Home Stretch
With just four regular season games left in the season, Wisconsin will need to play their best basketball to secure a double-bye heading into the Conference Tournament. Wisconsin basketball could certainly use the bye after struggling to play solid, fundamental basketball over the past month. If Wisconsin is able to secure a solid seeding heading into the tournament, it could certainly set them up to win the Big Ten with the right momentum and play.
