The Wisconsin Badgers had an up and down year under Luke Fickell’s first season as the head coach. The good news? They got the Axe back from the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The bad news? They were far from a National Championship caliber team.
The Badgers finished with a 7-6 overall record (5-4 in the Big Ten) and followed that up with a heart breaking 35-31 loss to LSU in their bowl game. However, expectations still remain high in Wisconsin with their recruiting classes and the fact that Fickell has seemed to success everywhere he goes.
To help with those expectations, the Badgers may be able to bring in a former NFL head coach who happens to be a defensive mastermind.
Wisconsin Badgers Pegged To Land Former NFL Head Coach To Revamp Defense

With most of the NFL head coach jobs spoken for, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel might be the odd man out. With that said, A to Z Sports has suggested that the Wisconsin football program could be a potential landing spot for Vrabel should he need a year to regroup.
While I’ll admit it’s wildly unlikely that Vrabel would end up with the Wisconsin Badgers as an analyst, it’s worth noting that plenty of high-level coaches have taken that path while waiting for the right situation.
It’s been well-documented that head coach Luke Fickell and Vrabel are close friends. The two coaches were college roommates at Ohio State and even worked alongside one another on the Buckeyes coaching staff.
Vrabel Would Be A Dream Hire For The Badgers
After Tennessee fired Mike Vrabel as head coach and wanted to make a change, shock waves reverberated across the NFL. With a 6-11 record this season, 2023 marked the second season in a row that the Titans missed the playoffs.
Mike Vrabel was the head coach of the Tennessee Titans for six seasons, he won the coach of the year award, was the number one seed in the AFC with Ryan Tannehill as quarterback, and is well respected by players.
During his tenure at Tennessee, he compiled a 54-45 record. Tennessee was also the sixth seed with Vrabel in 2019. Despite beating Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens that year in the playoffs, they lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship.
Vrabel has had a defensive background his entire coaching career. It would be a massive addition to a Badgers team who is looking to get to that next level.
