The Green Bay Packers may not lose any coaches this offseason because of them getting head coaching opportunities, but it may happen in 2025. Head coach Matt LaFleur led his team to the playoffs with a 9-8 record this season and the seventh seed in the NFC and are now preparing for the #2 seeded Dallas Cowboys (12-5), who won the NFC East this year.
There have been some assistant coaches who have been a big help this season to LaFleur and some others on the team. Packers fans have joked on social media that teams should hire defensive coordinator Joe Barry as a head coach, but no one would want to do that.
Barry may not be the defensive coordinator next season anyway. LaFleur may have to find a new defensive coordinator. However, there may be one coach that LaFleur might have to replace after the 2024 season.
Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Coach/Passing Game Coordinator Jason Vrable Could Be a Hot Head Coaching Candidate After Next Season
Vrable is only 38 years old and he is a rising offensive mind in the NFL. A lot of teams are trending toward hiring offensive-minded head coaches. There are currently six openings for a head coaching job and they are the Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Chargers.
Jason Vrable has been the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach over the last two seasons for the Green Bay Packers. He earned both of those titles on Feb. 1, 2022. He joined Green Bay on Feb. 1, 2019, as an offensive assistant and then was promoted to wide receivers coach on Mar. 12, 2020. Vrable has also done tremendous work with Davante Adams, Christian Watson, and Romeo Doubs.
Vrable did his best work yet this season with the young rookie receivers they have and with what he did with quarterback Jordan Love after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets this offseason.
Jayden Reed during his rookie season caught 64 passes for 793 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. He averaged 12.4 yards per reception and was also targeted 94 times. Reed was a second-round selection from Michigan State and has become the top receiving option on the Packers.
Dontayvion Wicks during his rookie season caught 39 passes for 581 yards receiving and four touchdowns. He averaged 14.9 yards per catch and was targeted 58 times. Wicks was a fifth-round selection from Virginia.
Quarterback Jordan Love completed 64.2% of his passes for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions this season. He also rushed for 247 yards on 50 carries and four touchdowns, along with averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Love had nine games this season when he threw 2 or more touchdown passes without throwing an interception.
Green Bay did not have a 1,000-yard receiver this season. However, if Jason Vrable can get Jordan Love and those other wide receivers to another level in 2024, and if the Green Bay Packers offense continues to grow, then he is going to no doubt get head coaching interviews by other teams across the NFL.
